Looking at Genre- analysing stills from music videos

In lesson today, we learnt about genres and in groups were given an image of a band or artist. We were given an image of Oasis from their song, Wonderwall (above), and were given the following questions to answer.

1. What genre would you say this 'still' is from?

- Indie Rock.

2. Describe what you see in terms of setting & location. Is it reminiscent of anything else you've seen?
- Black and white film, casual clothes, sitting on chairs and a guitar.

3. What sorts of generic signifiers would you expect from this genre?
- Guitars and clothes.

4. How does the 'still' use iconography to help the audience?
- Guitar = rock music.

5. Comment on the 'artist' and their costume - how does link with the genre?
- Casual clothes and the 'scruffy' look makes them look like others from the genre.

6. How does the lighting affect the mood and tone?
- There doesn't seem to be any obvious artificial light on the men, but I can assume all of it is artificial. The image is black and white, making it seem cold and dull.
