Disjuncture: Colplay's Paradise

Coldplay's Paradise video follows Goodwin's theory of the three types of music video. This video in particular was my favourite in showing how disjuncture works. The lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with the random elephant costumed actors, but still was made popular due to it's strange nature, promotion and leading band.

Disjuncture is the idea of basically completely ignoring the song’s meaning or concept completely and instead, create a whole new set of meanings or images that can be put to the song, a perfect example of this would be Can’t stop by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The idea of disjuncture works excellently with our video as the concept we have for the video has no relation to the song or its meaning in any way.To keep up this idea of disjuncture we will have to:
· Maintain our loose narrative· Ignore the songs original lyrics or theoretical meanings· Create our own meanings or ideas, i.e. our narrative· Use and create new conventions so as to challenge the normal conventions of electro / pop music such as Owl City.

Whilst thinking of ideas for our video, we had to plan whether it would be illustrative, aplificated or disjuncture (Andrew Goodwin's Theory). Whilst listening to the lyrics of this song, I realised it had nothing to do with the video and that the things in the video would not have come to mind if I had to recreate this.

I then went on to thinking if I wanted the same effect on our audience, or if I wanted to create a story within their minds and use our video as something visual that would make sense to them.
